This weekend, I travelled to Portland with two colleagues to attend a few events during the PICA Time-Based Art Festival and tour contemporary art spaces around the city. I knew little of the Portland art scene and was astounded by the number of nonprofit spaces sustaining experimental programming. Truly impressive what is happening down there! Is it time for Seattle to step up to the plate?
As Art Basel Miami Beach progressively morphs into a scattered void of celebrities and paparazzi, you can still see the art in Basel. Photographers (for the most part) still work for art magazines and it's still possible to saunter into Les Trois Rois and nab a prime seat in the lounge on Wednesday or Thursday evening. I spent this past week in New York for the Armory Show, dashing back and forth across the city enveloped in the customary "fairpocalypse" mode of being.
