AKTIONSART is pleased to announce the premiere of new films by Rainer Judd and Sue de Beer produced and distributed by AKTIONSART for Six Scents Series Three, an interdisciplinary collaboration between contemporary artists and fashion designers.

Each year, Six Scents Parfums invites six fashion designers to create a limited edition fragrance based around a central concept. In addition, a group of artists are invited to interpret the theme through film. Six Scents Series Three represents an exploration into the nature of childhood memories and each of the films portray the unavoidable transition from innocence to experience. Series Three features fragrances by Alexis Mabille, Mary Katrantzou, Junn.J, Rad Hourani, N.Hoolywood and Ohne Titel presented in individually numbered boxes, each containing a DVD of short films curated by Carmen Zita that includes artwork by Alia Raza, Rainer Judd, Olaf Breuning, Sue De Beer, Iain Forsyth & Jane Pollard, Heather Sommerfeld, Tim Richardson, Lucas Michael and James Widegren.

A Little Wonder, by Rainer Judd, was inspired by Martin Prechtel’s quote, “All wars are the result of a failure to grieve.” This short autobiographical film explores creativity as a passageway out of an environment of conflict, as a young girl uses her imagination to escape a hostile argument between her parents. The abstract narrative concludes with the young girl drawing as the camera pans up to show the artist as the grown child.

Sue de Beer’s Untitled, began as an exploration of memories of perfume bottles resting on the bathroom sinks of favorite hotels, and plays out as an arresting image of a young woman slowly removing her clothes in a hotel room.

The artworks are available to view on Vimeo and will also be shown in high quality on MUBI.

Six Scents Series Three will be offered in a limited quantity of 3,000 units and will be available at over 220 retailers worldwide including Opening Ceremony (New York), Seven New York (New York), Lucky Scents (Los Angeles), Liberty (London), Colette (Paris), 10 Corso Como (Seoul & Milan), and Adelaide (Tokyo) for $149.00 each.

A portion of the proceeds from Series Three will be donated to War Child. War Child works tirelessly to help children whose lives have been torn apart by conflict, providing them with the means to build a brighter future.

Carmen Zita has extensive experience working as an art advisor, an independent curator and an editor. She presently works for The Heller Group, a premier art advisory firm that specializes in advising some of the world’s most prominent collectors in Post-War and Contemporary art.

The conversation will focus on how Mrs. Kramlich and her husband collect new media and partner with cultural institutions to preserve and share their collection with future generations. Sir Nicholas Serota, director of Tate, will join us.

Pamela and Richard Kramlich founded the New Art Trust in 1997 with the goal of advancing media arts through the support of research and scholarship in the field. NAT has since formed a partnership with three major museums – MoMA, SFMOMA, and Tate – dedicated to public education and intensive research related to the special requirements of media artworks.

AKTIONSART presents “Street Tapes”, a film screening that surveys how artists use new technologies to investigate urban life and public space. The contemporary genre of street art is traced from the moment when the Lumiere brothers invented the cinematographe and created the first motion picture in 1895. Long before moving image became defined by commercial filmmaking, artists used the camera to create non-narrative shorts and capture ephemeral images of city life. While not commonly related to contemporary notions of street art, these early films are an integral component of the historical lineage.

The program title references the ‘street tape’ style of filmmaking that emerged in the early seventies in New York City when Andy Mann began to use the first portable videocassette recorder, the Sony Portapak. Following his lead, other artists such as Gordon Matta-Clark took this new technology to the streets and developed a style that emphasized art as real life, with a minimum of editing and acting. Though the technology and methods of interacting with the street constantly change, the artists included in this screening all share the common ideology that provokes street art. The same impetus that drove the Lumiere brothers to capture images of the street translates to contemporary practice utilizing new media and digital distribution platforms such as YouTube and mobile phones. The work presented moves between traditional fine art boundaries and represents documentation, performance, fine art objects, experimental film and commercial feature films.
